Similar pieces to the "Dante Sonata"
on: April 24, 2022, 01:28:22 PM
Hi! I am starting my journey in Liszt compositions, and I've always loved the "Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata ". Something about the mysteriousness and the deep emotional parts of it that just make me very interested in this sort of pieces, but I do not have the skill or knowledge to play such a high technical piece!

I wanted to know if any of you know about any piece of Liszt with the samemysteriousness and the deep emotional parts but easier! Ive checked some pieces such as "Sunt lacrimae rerum" and others but I wanted to know if there is any more!

Thank you !

I feel there are some similaritites between the Dante sonata and this work, though this one is much easier (it has some hard parts still):

DISCLAIMER!!!!!!!! Everything on this list is extremely difficult already, so take it with a grain of salt. However, the Dante Sonata is an especially profound and challenging work, so building up to it with some of the repertoire listed below may be helpful. These are listed in approximate order of difficulty, but please take it with a grain of salt. There are certain persons on this forum who will absolutely blast people that they think are giving bad advice (or asking stupid questions).

Here are some suggestions--

Hungarian Rhapsody No. 4
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 5
Hungarian Rhapsody No. 17
Funeralles
Transcendental Etude No. 6 "Visions," 7 "Eroica," 8 "Wilde Jagd," 9 "Ricordanza," 10
Ballade No. 2
Vallee d'Obermann

I would also recommend playing the other pieces from the second year of pilgrimage! That's my personal project for the next year, alongside Un Sospiro and Ricordanza, and the three Liebestraums.
1st-year Master's Program:
- Ravel Piano Concerto
- Liszt Ricordanza
- Liszt 3 Liebestraums
- Liszt 3 Sonnets

- Rhapsody in Blue
- Dante Sonata
- Schubert Sonata D.780
- Mozart Piano Quartet in Gm

There aren't any pieces that are directly comparable IMO.  You'll find some aspects of it in each of these:

Oh oops, you wanted easier.  Well, the Ballade No. 2 and Benediction are easier, but they're still virtuoso pieces.
