Women and the Chopin Competition: Breaking Barriers in Classical Music

The piano, a sleek monument of polished wood and ivory keys, holds a curious, often paradoxical, position in music history, especially for women. While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges. Hi Everyone, I played to RCM grade 8/9 until university. I'm now late 30s and want to restart. I've always had the goal of my ARCT in piano (ped.). My last completed exam was Grade 7. How long would it realistically take to complete my ARCT starting back again? Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Pianostreet.

Difficult to give you an estimate as we do not know how much time you have to commit to studies.

When you say you have Grade 7, does that include the co requisite theory exams or only the practical?  Keep in mind as you approach ARCT, there is an increasing number of theoretical requirements.  Make sure to factor the theory exams into your time as you make your way to your goal.  Refer to the piano syllabus and theory syllabus for  a picture of what work is required.

A rough timetable might be 12 to 18 months studies each for grades 8 and 9.  12 to 24 months for grade 10.  1 to 3 years for ARCT.  This is for both practical and theory.

Depends if your goal is to get it done as quickly as possible, or if you want to enjoy the journey and take in as much as you can.  Are you doing this as a personal goal, or do you need the credential for professional work?  Tell us more and we may be able to provide a more detailed answer.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
