single sentence posts
on: February 15, 2005, 01:03:06 AM
nilsjohan has complained to me about this.

i post quite a few one sentence posts, and i dont see that there is much of a problem with this as he does.

his point is that, some people have slow connections, and read through many topics, and are annoyed to find a new post in a topic with nothing of interest to them.

he implicitly also wrote further - that its ok to post 1 sentence posts as long as they are of value.

i think the 'value' of some posts are very subjective, and its a bit offensive to consider a post of little value.

what do others think?

Hmm...
I did not really put it that way in my PM.
Rather:

"Nothing wrong with single sentence post as long as they are on topic and adds something valuable to the discussions.

It is rather the short off topic (or semi-off-topic) "funny" comments that are tiring people when browsing and reading the thousands of pages in search for useful information.
(It may be interesting to know that only about 10% of the Piano Forum visitors have ever posted something so 90% of them just come here to read.)"

Anyway, an interesting topic to discuss since many of you complain about this.
I look forward to hear your comments!

yes, but i dont think 'funny' comments shouldnt have their place here.

as long as they are appropriate it lightens things up and actually inspires more people to join.

but yes i think its better perhaps to have a joke just be a part of a post,  and have the rest be serious comments.

but lest we forget that this is one of the reasons piano and classical music isnt as popular - because it isnt discussed with as much humour.

These, call them, 'lesser value' posts with more of a humorous aim have their place under Anything But Piano section.  Those searching for information probably won't expect to find much there anyway.

Lenny, I've been following your posts and it's clear to me that an overwhelming majority are insignificant one-sentence (or less) posts intended to boost your post count.  They are, in my opinion, annoying, because others are trying to help out and answer questions and do a good service to the forum, whereas you have more self-centered motives.

It depends where the post is and what it is.  If it's in the serious part of pf, then the post should be more serious, although I don't mind having jokes tacked on to a serious reply.  If it's Anything But Piano, then I wouldn't be surprised by anything there.  Some of the threads are meant to be short replies -- Your Favorite piece, fall, etc.

I don't mind seeing single sentence posts in the serious sections that are something like, "I agree," "I'm also interested in this topic," or "Well said!"  If they are still on topic and encourage the thread, then I think it's all right.  Some of the smaller comments can break up the long replies.

I don't think people would mind a thank you.  esp if it were followed by what you did or what you were planning on doing based on the reponse you're doing the thank you for.

You posted 3 posts in a row in intervals of a minute. Are you aware of the modify button? Or are you purposely continuing to do what you've been criticized for to maintain your sense of independence and freedom? Or just irritating people on purpose?

the erection had no connotation and therefore wasnt wrong, maybe you just have a dirty mind?  ::)

and ok i concede the anal sex, but obviously a discussion about homosexuality onvolves this, its perfectly appropriate.

Ok, but you could refer different persons in the same post. Doing separate posts because it saves you time is selfish because it automatically takes the time from others, multiplied by the number of viewers. Besides, it makes threads unnecessarily long and generally annoying to read when one expects to read a dialog but sees the same person post numerous times in a row.

We can talk about dirty minds if you want.  Are you really too stupid to realize why xvimbi is pissed at you for ruining the story thread (in which I have never posted, incidentally)?

Just a guess, but it may stem from the fact that you decided to add the words "erect," "phallic," "thrusted," "labia," and "coital."  Am I reading between the lines too much here, Lenny?  I don't think so.  I'm surprised you had the nerve to accuse me of having a dirty mind.  Why are you here?  Clearly not to discuss the piano.  I'm sure there are many other sites on the vast world wide web that would better suit your interests.

I move to have lenny banned from the Pianoforum.  All in favor say Ay!  He has shown nothing but disregard for everyone's feedback and as previously said, quite obviously has little interest in contributing anything useful to the community.

That might be a bit drastic. I think only those should be banned who are generally offensive, mischievous, degrading, hurtful and full of malicious intent. We have had such members in the past. They either realized that this forum is not "relaxed" enough for them and left, or they were convinced to behave appropriately in a community that comprises people from very different cultures and age groups, with very different backgrounds and ethics. Or they got indeed banned. One even banned himself...

lenny, keep in mind that most people here on this forum are looking for constructive information; they are from many different cultures and age groups. A lot of the things that are OK in a college dorm are utterly inappropriate in this environment.

I totally agree with Nilsjohan and SteinwayTony.  I am thoroughly annoyed with Lenny's single sentence posts and especially the posts that are only one of the emoticons/faces.  Grow up.  It took me months to become a senior member, but becoming a senior member shouldn't be your goal.  Your goal should be to learn and to share your knowledge with others.  Single word posts are only appropriate in the 'Anything but Piano' category.  The 'Fall' thread comes to mind.  That was great!  Would someone like to start that again?!

I also agree to a ban. (btw Lenny--do you have a sister named Julie?!)

(Modify--I just noticed that Lenny gave an intelligent-sounding post under, I think, "Chopin Polonaises" in the Teaching section  (sorry, too hurried to look).  But Lenny, I still wonder if you are related to Julie! )

Man, why don't we cut Lenny a break here. I'll be the first to admit that sometimes it would be nice to see him condense his ideas sometimes (ok a lot) into a single post, rather than multiple, short, consecutive posts, but all this talk of banning is simply ridiculous.

I'm sure he will take your suggestions into consideration and post in a more "appropriate" manner.

Peace,
Bri

and the emoticon-only posts are in the 'anything' section, which is supposed to be chilled out and friendly anyway, right?

Banning Lenny? Truthfully, I haven't seen anything that I would consider a genuine problem.

Lenny,

I checked through your posts. Most did indeed contribute to the conversation. Just keep it up, and don't use smileys to express your opinion without text to back it up. Think about it this way: who is going to take you seriously if you can't even construct a sentence? There are much better ways to express yourself rather than limiting your posts to "::)".

I feel guilty, actually, that so many posts of mine are in that 'let's write a story' thread. However, if you want to keep your posts short and silly, the way much of them have been of recent, than keep them in threads like that, that don't waste people's time who want to read about PIANO.

Thank you.

I didn't go back thru all of Lenny's posts, but I believe you when you say that you did.  Lenny, I owe you an apology about having said earlier that you should be banned.  You have done nothing inappropriate (just excessive!!!)

A call for a ban is a bit drastic.  I haven't been offended by anything lenny has posted, and I think many of his posts are of value.  Admittedly, I haven't had time to read all his posts, but the ones I've seen do not seem offensive.

i read through most of his posts and assuming Nils hasn't deleted a ton of them, i can't see anything that warrants a ban. Sure his story thread entries were in poor taste but ,unlike what was written about him in the thread, they were not direct insults. Btw, I know of at least one very highly regarded poster who quite frequently uses emoticon-only posts to sum up his/her feelings. IMO its not that big of a deal.

Actually, Nils (or someone) has.  The offensive words Lenny added to the story thread were deleted.  Fortunately a small proportion of people view or participate in that thread.
