great piano method book for an old brass player?
on: December 25, 2022, 07:42:06 PM
used to be a brass player but wanna play piano now.
currently i have Alfred's Adult Piano course, self teaching.  is this the best course to learn or should i keep looking?

years ago i learned trumpet in school and played in church, but would like to move on.   the treble clef is easy but need to learn some chords et al to play hymns and popular music.

so where to start?  i just got a new keyboard and have an old 76 key kurzweil to play on.

what i want is a method that is fun and interesting.  something that will keep me playing every day instead of a chore.

thanks for the help.   :)

Getting a teacher is definitely worthwile. Then one has to practice. I could not make myself practice enough without goals, and preparing for lessons is good work. Some may want lessons only every two weeks, I opted for weekly.

thanks.  good suggestion.

for starts i will teach myself, but am looking for a Great method/book to stay motivated.  Alfreds self teaching adult piano looks good, could there be something better?

With a teacher you can discuss what you want and a good teacher soon knows what is good to practice.
I started with Alfred https://www.alfred.com/exploring-piano-classics-repertoire-level-1/p/00-31355/ authored by Nancy Bachus, because I wanted classical approach, but you may want some other method, probably the Alfred adult method is good.

Some may say, get the adult method, but also the music you want to play, and start with the music you really want to play.

thanks.  i have been looking at my Alfred method book and it looks to be fairly comprehensive for beginners, so may just start there.  amazon has a ton of books, it may be best to just buy a few and compare what is available.

YouTube is spilling over with advice, probably next best way of learning.

This complete course is better for you: https://shopus.rcmusic.com/collections/celebration-series
Just because you are an adult, the level one would not necessarily be too easy for you, especially if you want to play hand crossing without looking at where your fingers should land. You just have to get use to leaping without looking from day one. Although there's not a whole lot of big leaps across the keyboard in church music, there's still a lot of moving around within two octaves on both hands.

You have an advantage of being a sight-reader as a brass player. If you want to play piano well, there's no shortcuts to it. You will be happier not using adult course--unless you just want to fool yourself to impress people you don't like.
