New piece suggestions?
on: May 30, 2023, 07:22:45 PM
Hey! Just looking for some suggestions on what I should play next. I know this sounds kind of funny, but this summer, I want to learn a big piece before I head off to college. But, I suck at sight reading and I'm slow at learning stuff in general (recently took me ~3 months to learn and memorize Liszt's Mephisto Waltz No. 1).
I was thinking about Chopin Sonata No. 2, Scriabin Sonata No. 2, Scriabin Sonata No. 3, Schumann Sonata No. 2, and the Liszt Dante Sonata in particular. I've looked through their scores and they all seem doable in a relatively short amount of time. But then again, I suck at sight reading
. For anyone who's played any of these pieces, how long do you think it would take someone to learn them as opposed to comparable(?) pieces like the Chopin Ballades or late Beethoven Sonatas? Are there any other big pieces that yall would recommend? Ty!

I have played the Chopin Sonata No. 2 and Scriabin Sonata No. 2. I would say overall the Chopin is harder, but hardest bits of Scriabin are harder than Chopin The Scriabin 2 2nd movement is very fast and got some hairy parts that you simply have to know very well to succeed in tempo, but I'd say it's easier than it looks. The biggest challenge in that one is the theme but it's not a lot of bars so you'll be working those over a lot anyways.
As for how long they take to learn, hard to say. Depends on your ability

Hmm ok, I'm mainly turned off by the nasty looking key signatures. I might just try reading through each of them and seeing how long it takes...
