Scales at auditions
on: June 09, 2023, 10:21:11 PM
Has anyone done an audition for a school where they were asked to play scales and arpeggios? What exactly did they ask for during the audition?
In all my years playing my other not-piano instrument, I never had to play a scale at an audition, so I'm having a hard time picturing how it would go.

I haven't, but I have heard of places that do. Be prepared that they'll ask you to play any of the major or minor scales, in any range of octaves, in a given tempo, hands together or hands separate. You might have to do it in contrary motion. If it's a really advanced, prestiguous conservatory it might be 16th notes at quarter = 180, but most other places it's likely slower. But I think your best option is to call the place and ask.
