How to motivate technique practice?
on: April 17, 2003, 09:47:52 AM
A common problem, my students don't like practicing scales, chords, arpeggios etc....especially my teenage students ages 12-15.
Any suggestions on how to make practicing technique more fun for students?
My young students on the other hand don't mind it as much because they like collecting stickers each week. They also have less technique to practice than the older students.
Thank you!

Make them understand the point of technique. Not talking, but playing. Play some of Mozart for the scales, Liszt for arpeggios and so forth (or bring CDs they can listen to), so they can realize how much it's useful and how nice it sounds integrated in a piece.
Give them precise instructions on how to practive technique and set weegly goals : this week : that scale and arpeggio, metronome that, concentration especially on the legato.
