Pieces with repeated chords
on: August 07, 2023, 11:52:42 AM
Hi guys, I’m looking for some pieces with repeating chords in a section. Some examples are Rach Prelude in B Minor, the end of Scriabins 4th sonata, the climax of Scriabins 5th, the end of Bortkiewicz op 33 no 7 and no 8, Scriabin Fantasie in B minor middle climax, rach op 39 no 5, coda of Scriabin etude in d sharp.

Hopefully these will give you an idea of what I’m looking for.

Thank you!

Does Chopin Nocturne in c minor op 48 no 1 fit the bill?

Chopin's Polonaise-Fantaisie Op 61 has a short section with repeating chords near the end, when the theme returns.

Sticking with Scriabin, there's Op. 8 no. 1 (repeated chords for both hands at different points--it's really usually the bottom two notes of a chord, but they're played like chords rather than legato thirds and fourths) and Op. 11 no. 24.  For the etude you want to voice a melody with the chords, so a real lightness needs to be achieved. For the prelude, for me at least, there's a little awkwardness because you're often repeating and alternating between the lower and upper three notes of a four note chord spanning an octave, so if you get tense with extensions it's not the best starting point for repeated chords).

An entire page of them is to be found at the opening of Alkan's Op. 39 No. 11, Ouverture, the penultimate étude of his 12 Études dans les tons mineurs.

The second half of Liszt's Harmonies du Soir is my favourite use of this particular texture.
If you want something more extreme, Debussy's Étude 12 Pour les accords.

Thre are a few instances in Liszt's first Mephisto Waltz, too...

If you want repeated chords, there are many, many waltzes for that... you just need to pick the right ones.
last 3 schubert sonatas and piano trios are something else

I was also looking for pieces with a lot of repeated chords a while back.
Many Chopin pieces have sections with a series of chords, Rachmaninoff's and Scriabin's pieces even more so.  If you really want pieces very focused on chords, etudes may be your best bet.  Here's a list:

Brahms Rhapsody in E-flat Op 119
Brahms Capriccio in d minor Op 116 no 1
Rachmaninoff Etude-Tableau Op 39 no 5 in e-flat minor (beautiful piece!)
Scriabin Etude in c# minor Op 2
Scriabin Etude in d# minor Op 12 no 8
Chopin Etude op 25 no 4
Chopin Etude no 2 from Three Nouvelles Etudes
Moskowski Etude in G Op 72 no 3
Czerny Etude Op 740  no 40 (RH only unfortunately)
Moscheles Etude Op 70 no 2
Sauer Staccato Etude
