What piece do you guys suggest?
on: August 20, 2023, 01:46:23 AM
Hi, I am a pianist who just passed grade 6(with distinction)ABRSM and I’m about to start grade 8(yes, I skipped grade 7) and I’m looking for some classical pieces to practice so I can perform, however, I’m struggling to find a good classical piece that is around my level, I did Fur Elise but it was a bit too easy, and I’m trying to learn flight of the bumblebee, but I think I will need more time to perform it well, I’m thinking to do moonlight sonata 3rd movement or revolutionary etude, and also how hard is the revolutionary etude? Some people say it’s easy some say it’s hard, so do you guys think I’ll get on with revolutionary etude pretty well? Or do you guys suggest other pieces?

If you are struggling with flight of the bumblebee I think you'll struggle with the revolutionary and moonlight 3rd movement. I would assume playing some mid tempo to fast but not super fast pieces would be good for you without having heard you play. Check out the Schubert impormptu in E flat Op. 90 no. 2, it's pretty cool and not too difficult.

This is the closest thing we have to a graded database so have a look at anything marked 6-8 and see if it interests you:

Annoyingly ABRSM themselves don't have a database, probably to avoid arguments around whether their exams have gotten easier. But it's easy enough to find old Grade 7/8 lists through an internet search, so again have a read/listen and see what you think.
