looking for studies for LH double notes
on: September 18, 2023, 05:18:30 PM
Hello,
I'm looking for recommendations for studies for LH double notes (typically 3rds, but could be 4ths, 6ths, etc.).  I have found a couple, so you don't need to recommend those:  Chopin's Etude on 6ths Op25 (going to work on it), Czerny Op 399 #2 (this is what I'm looking for technically, but the piece is too long and not very interesting musically, but I'll probably work on it some). I'm also familiar with Moskowski's Etudes Op 72 #8 and #15 which look like they have what I'm looking for, something easier would be preferable).
Thanks!!

Czerny 718.
Alexander Dreyschock Op.22.
Godowski Studies on Chopin - as hard as Chopin.
Moszkowski Op. 72 you already mentioned, but he also wrote Op. 64.

I remember seeing a book (anthology) of single hand studies. Will try to find it.

IMSLP has couple of Adolpho Fumagali (Fumagalli) works for left hand. His Fantasie Diable is considered a virtuosi piece but has fragments that should be of interest for you. Study on Lammermoor is much easier.

You can also do your own research here: https://imslp.org/index.php?title=Category:For_piano_left_hand&transclude=Template:Catintro

Couple external reference resources:
- One Handed. A Guide to Piano Music for One Hand, by Donald Patterson, Donald L. Patterson (Greenwood Press, 1999) - reference, not sheet music.

Thank you for your informative reply, Kosulin!
Couple notes for everyone who visits this topic subsequently...
Czerny Studies for the Left Hand op 718 has a double-note study:  #3.  All the studies from this opus are on a simpler (musically and creatively) level than the School of Velocity (later books) and Art of Finger Dexterity, but the challenges for the LH are apropos for the intermediate pianist.
I suspect you meant Moskowski op 92, rather than 72 (since I already mentioned that opus), which are Studies for the Left Hand alone.  Number 3 is for double notes - a very challenging piece but worth a try.
Thank you for the IMSLP reference and book reference as well!

Even better is an all-round (well, mostly) etude for the left hand - the Chaconne in D Minor by Bach/Brahms!
last 3 schubert sonatas and piano trios are something else

Thank you transitional!  How did I not know about this?  Where it's not decidedly focused on double notes, it is an exceptional study for the LH.  It's this or the Chopin Etude Op25 #7 for working on expressive phrasing and tone control in the LH, and I'm feeling the Bach-Brahms more... thanks for the recommendation.

Since I wrote this, I found another piece that meets the requirement:  "LH double notes."  And that is Czerny The NEW School of Velocity Op 834 #23 (out of 30). It's equal to the RH in executing shore patterns in 3rds.

Also, there are a few in Czerny's 160 Eight Measure Exercises Op 821.
