Should I perform or not?
on: November 10, 2023, 10:05:28 PM
Helloo so I have a recital coming up and I decided to perform Once Upon a December because it's gonna be in December and I wanted to do something sort of to the theme but I found out after basically finishing the arrangement and after working really hard that someone is doing the same song, but they're going to sing it.
I know that they're two different things, but the fact that it's the same song just makes me so uncomfortable 😭 I don't mean to sound stuck up or anything but now I really don't know if I still want to play in the recital. I don't want to ask her to change her song or anything because I'm sure she's been working just as hard and that would just be incredibely rude of me but I just feel really weird about it and sort of embarrassed?
Also piano teacher wasn't the one who told me, it was a sub that I had so I'm not even 100% sure she fully knows the situation, so I'm not sure if I should talk to her about it or not either, because im afraid someone might get hurt out of it
So I'm just looking for some advice and opinions if anyone's up for it 😁

…someone is doing the same song, but they're going to sing it. …😁

Maybe both of u can do it.. can u play the piano and that person sing it? Also, I have been in recitals where many of the same songs are played but in different keys or arrangements. It was fine. It does take some of the value away but still good.

I'd say go ahead. Every opportunity to practice performing is great, unless you already so many opportunities that one more or less doesn't matter (but that's not very likely).

Go for it. It's fine. It could be interesting for the audience to hear two versions and interpretations of the same thing.

If you feel comfortable, consider reaching out to the person who will be singing the song. Let her know that you've also chosen the same piece and express your feelings about it. It could be an opportunity to share your excitement for the song and discuss how you both can showcase it in different ways.
