Volodos. Why has he stopped recording?
on: January 13, 2024, 08:30:41 PM
No new recording in the past 5 years. Anybody know why? And no, I'm not saying he has to make recordings or anything like that. Just curious regarding why he stopped releasing recordings after that fabulous Schubert in 2019.

I have the exact same question!
Like you, I'm not saying he HAS to make records or anything like that. I'm just curious too! Has he taken an hiatus? Does he think he doesn't have much to "say" in terms of interpretation? Is he simply personally happier by not recording or not having to do so? He seems to be giving recitals regularly, so he doesn't seem to have retired from playing.
Whatever the answer, I really hope he is personally happy. He certainly has made my life happier with his recordings.  :)

Arcadi Volodos has not officially stopped recording, but he has significantly slowed his output, focusing on specific repertoire like Schubert and Brahms rather than high-octane virtuoso pieces. While his last major studio album was in 2019, his reduced recording schedule is likely due to his preference for introspection, a small discography, and focusing on live performance.
Possible factors for his reduced recording activity include:
Focus on Performance: Volodos has shifted away from the pressures of frequent studio recordings, preferring to focus on live recitals.
Repertoire Shift: He moved away from early virtuosic transcriptions to more intimate works by Mompou, Brahms, and Schubert.
Selective Approach: He is known for a relatively small, highly curated discography rather than continuous releases.
His last major studio recording was the Schubert: Piano Sonata D.959 & Minuets in 2019.

He probably shares Argerich’s aversion for studio work.
Fueling on the connection to an audience rather than the multiple takes and cold tinkering of technology to get a sound .
