audition repertoire!!
on: January 14, 2024, 04:34:17 PM
hi peeps!
I am currently a junior in high school and will be applying for music schools this winter. I am thinking to apply for schools like umich, msm, and peabody. I would really appreciate your thoughts on my audition rep :)

1. Bach wtc bwv881 f minor
2. Beethoven op. 10 no. 1
3. Chopin etude op. 25 no. 10
4. Liszt ballade no. 2
or Medtner two tales op. 20
5. Bacewicz sonata no. 2

Does anyone know if Medtner can be used for the romantic piece? Would schools want to hear early romantic pieces more than late romantic?

Thanks!!  :) :)

I don't know but you could contact the school and ask about Medtner! Stylistically it's definitely late romantic and contemporary with Rachmaninoff who is typically seen as late romantic repertoire in auditions and competitions.

Repertoire looks nice otherwise. Perhaps you want something that's more in major / upbeat to balance out all the moody minor you got there. I am not familiar with the Bacewicz sonata so can't tell if it balances it out.

Hi, thanks so much!! :)
It's my first time posting here I did not expect someone to reply :D

Recently I've participated in a music festival where I asked profs about using compositions by Medtner for auditions. For anyone with the same question, most profs think it fits the requirements as long as it differs from the other audition pieces!

I think it's so awesome that you are programming a recent work (post 1940 lol)!  Congrats!
I'm listening to this sonata now - - have you found it difficult?  It looks to take about 16'.  Are you doing a specific movement?

Hi! how do you think the sonata sounds? :D I think most people don't know of it.
I've played the first and second movements and am working on the third. I haven't found this piece too challenging -- I think it's a pretty fun piece (I prolly sound like a nerd...) I think it requires a lot of work and thinking (otherwise it sounds fragmented and incomprehensible) It's pretty complicated and thick but sounds very nice :)
I'm actually not sure if I will be using the whole sonata. Is it too long? I've thought about this before... but for now I just plan to have it prepared ;D
