Amazing bravura pieces!
on: February 13, 2024, 05:17:08 PM
What are some pieces that could be considered bravura that also manage to sound pleasant to the ear? Basically, we've all asked what pieces are the hardest without a care as to how they sound; what about hard pieces that sound the best?
I'll start us off with Grand Galop Chromatique from Liszt (S. 219). The entire thing is nightmarish to preform while still sounding amazing, especially the second half of the piece.
Rachmaninoff's Prelude in G Minor (op. 23 no. 5) is another great piece that can be very difficult to pull off. I'm curious to know any others that you can think of.

La Campanella is an obvious choice!

I named myself after 2 of the 3 galops lol. A minor was one of them, the other was Chromatique. I personally feel like A minor was like Scarbo: meant to be a display of extreme skill, regardless of how it actually sounds. Don't get me wrong, it's a good piece. I just feel like it's too oriented towards sheer difficulty than the ones that have been mentioned so far. Same goes for Scarbo.
I feel like both Chopin 10/1 and 10/4 fit the bill for bravura, even if they're seldom played alone.

Manuel de Falla, Fantasía bética for one that's off the beaten track.
