Czerny's Op. 740 No. 37
on: April 17, 2024, 07:16:39 AM
I'm currently studying this Etude, which has semiquaver triplets in the left hand.

I'm tensing all through the whole piece both when these triplets are scales or arpeggios.

Does anybody have any tips on how to play it?

I feel like everytime I am using fingers 1-2-1 on the left hand (when I have D-C#-D or similar) I am playing using the fingers because after some time I feel my second finger's tendon.

What does your teacher have to say about this problem?

Overall, I'm guessing you've jumped into playing this too fast, without having done the preliminary slow and careful pre-work.

I see you've worked on no 41 which is also for the LH - - did you have tension problems with that one?

I'm curious, is it a LH only issue?  How about op 740 no 50 - that's quite a demanding piece for RH - did you have a tension problem?   If not, study what the RH is doing right, and the LH is doing wrong.

She told me to just "wiggle" the forearm and play each long phrase thinking about putting the weight only on the first note of the group and the rest just come from it.

I changed my fingering from 1-2-1 to 1-3-1 and it is helping.

I usually have tension with everything, I had tension with the left hand on number 41 and on the right hand on the 50, but not as much as in this one.

Josh Wright demos this technique on YT, he calls it "shake away the tension".  You can search for his video titled "3 Tips To Play Faster, Lighter, and Looser".

I've played a lot of Czerny and have developed some techniques to master them.  Check out my channel and message me if you want more info.

Check the whole "chain" starting with checking if you do not pull up your shoulders.Wrist as well.
Practice slowly and relax after every attaque, staccato, rhythms etc
check if your fingers are the "allegation" of the key.
Check if you dont push too long ( after having reached the bottom of the key)
Keep checking and of course listening ... It has to sound relaxed and feel relaxed...
