I'm always touched by Medtner's "Alla Reminiscenza."  It makes a great encore piece.

I quite agree. The "reminiscence" theme along with the rhythmic intricacies make for a very heartfelt close to the op.38 Forgotten Melodies cycle.

A melody that, also, never seems to quit one's mind is the op.1 no.1 Prologue from the 8 Mood Pictures (also the song "Angel", op.1bis, the same piece in another guise). Incredibly moving.

I also find the "Hymn" theme from Medtner's 3rd concerto/3rd movement to be one of the best melodies ever written, incredibly beautiful and profound. Medtner seems to have a special ability to effortless convey the sublime and divine in his music.

My all time favourite is the theme from the first movement of Rachmaninov's 3rd Concerto. There's plenty of other great themes in that concerto too, like the start of the third movement. I love that, it really inspires excitement.

Rachmoninoff 3rd concerto, opening theme (hell, all of the themes)

Rachmaninoff - op 23 no 7 (prelude), I also second the vocalise

Schubert - piano trio in Bflat major

Dvorak - trio in f minor (2nd movement, AMAZING movement/trio)

Barber - violin concerto, opening theme 1st movement

Mendelssohn - violin concerto, opening theme 1st movement

Mozart d minor concerto (466?) opening theme

Bartok - Romanian Folk dance for violin and piano, number 4 (preferably performed by Midori)...erm Horn pipe dance

There is a section in the Mephisto Waltz that I find beautiful.

Brahms - violin (and piano) sonata in .. err d minor i believe....

I have a rec of No. 2, and I actually like it more than No. 1.  I've never heard No. 3 either, but my teacher told me it's worthless - not real melodies, just a bunch of piano cadenzas one right after the other.

I really do believe that the most sublime, touching, beautiful melody is the adagio from Mozart's clarinet concerto.  Whenever I'm anxious, nervous, scared, etc etc I listen to it and all my tensions ease away.  It's so relaxed and beautiful... I can't really describe it.  Definitely the most beautiful thing ever written, IMHO.

Mozart actually has countless slow movements that are sublime beyond words ...... especially those in his piano concerti.

Sometimes I'll just stumble upon a touching melody, doing impromptu stuff.

I think the most touching melodies are the ones that do not seem calculated.  You have to feel them.

Well... I play clarinet... so you could say I'm a bit biased...  :D
