Encore ideas?
on: May 19, 2024, 05:04:19 PM
I have my first concert in september later this year and was wondering for encore ideas. I was orginally going to to do Liszt etude no 10 or op 62 no 1, but i have simply just included them into the program over other things. I want something with some virtuosity but i dont want it to be too long. (no longer than 5 mins)
Maybe a transcription by liszt, any ideas?

This is just an idea, but if you want virtuosic, I've been interested in some Horowitz transcriptions, and the Stars and Stripes Forever transcription is my favorite, since I played it before and its somewhat doable. You can pick other transcriptions he made too, like the Carmen variations.

I understand the appeal of a virtuoso encore, but lately I've been seeing so pretty famous pianists do relatively simple pieces as their encore, played beautifully, of course, things like a slow Scarlatti sonata, or Chopin's C# minor posthumous Nocturne or a Grieg air. If your programme is full of technically difficult stuff, the audience might actually like something simple and beautiful.

If you want a great Liszt transcription, Widmung is beautiful.

I was actually thinking about the stars and stripes and the Rakoczi march, this is a great idea thank you.

hmm yes, i feel that something slower might be better because the program is looking pretty jam packed with virtuoso stuff already, so windmug is a good idea, it could go along well with liebestraum no 3 which is looking likely to also be in the program.

Au bord d'une source would probably fit your needs. It's virtuostic but not intimidating, and it's fast and impressive but doesn't really sound fast.
last 3 schubert sonatas and piano trios are something else

Falla's Ritual Fire Dance, which was one of Rubinstein's go-to encores. The standard transcription sounds impressive without being that difficult. Alicia de Larrocha's version is more difficult (and better played than Rubinstein) if you want that, however she never wrote it down so you have to figure it out from her recording (pretty straightforward, just longer trills and additional octaves)

If you want something more off the beaten track, Sciarrino's Anamorfosi. I've used that myself and it went down really well.

This is a lovely suggestion, looking at the sheet its not that bad, so i think i will go with this. Thank you so much!

Some (but not too much) virtuosity, crowd-pleasing, and short...

Liszt/Paganini Etude 5 might be a good choice for an Etude.
Widmung would be a decent option, but was already mentioned.
Chopin's 27/2 Nocturne is a good choice but it's a little too long (6 minutes).
Jardins sous la Pluie (Debussy) is (probably) a bit more difficult than the pieces that I've mentioned here, but I think it might actually be a great choice.

Hope this helps! :)

Play this (if you can):  Ravel: Miroirs - Alborada Del Gracioso

Who are your audience? Teachers and students of your college/school? Elderlies? Public?

What works are in your recital programme?  All romantic?  Mixed?

After the programme in the recital, how much energy and concentration you'd likely left with?

Any chance to do more encore(s) if the audience react favourably and request so?

Probably some considerations on the above so that your encore work will cohere with the recital programme and keep good impression to your audience.

Good luck!!

Hi symphonicdance the program is for the public, the repetoire is mostly romantic and with scriabin with whatever category he falls into, and some beethoven which could be considered classical but it is a middle era sonata. there is a good point about the energy but we will see on the day i guess.
