There are times when the sostenuto (middle) pedal is required.
I wonder if Prokofiev played the held notes and placed the sostenuto, then played the upper notes ... very very quickly.  I don't think he held the sustaining pedal throughout the measure... that blur effect doesn't seem aligned with this precise, cubist, style.
