How to hold quarter notes in RH with thumb bar 29 30 Chopin etude op 10 no4

The previous 4 bars and the next 2 bars all have to same pattern of holding a quarter note with the thumb for the right hand. It’s especially hard during this section cause of the left-right motion + high speed. Anyone has tips? Thanks !

I play them sort of portato. I hold them long enough to not just be "staccato", but I don't go for a tight legato either. You can create an illusion of legato without a physical legato anyways. If you can connect the upper voice really smoothly, it should not be a challenge to add the held note if you are relaxed.

The passage you're describing sounds challenging due to the repeated thumb holding while managing the left-right motion at high speed. Break the passage down into different rhythmic groupings (e.g, dotted rhythms) to challenge your fingers in different ways and gain better control over the motion.
