Help deciding which concerto to learn
on: September 03, 2024, 01:27:07 PM
Hi all, first post here. I'm advanced pianist with some solo recital experience but I've never had the opportunity to play a concerto. I just finished a recital and I'm deciding what to play next. The following are ones I've had my eye on for a while:
Ravel LH
Bartok 3
Prokofiev 3
Moszkowski Op 59
Rautavaara 3
Curious on any thoughts about these. Which are fun to learn, which might be possible to program in the future (not sure many local orchestras are gonna pick up Rautavaara but you never know), which give a good introduction to the genre...
Thanks!

Clearly I'm biased but the Moszkowski is such a phenomenal piece. It's tough for sure but well worth it. Ravel LH is more commonly programmed, but more technically challenging (but also shorter).
That being said, I would probably start with an easier concerto just because fitting the piano together with the orchestra can be tough at points for all of the pieces you've listed. If you've never had ensemble experience you wont be able to put together Prok 3 with an orchestra or accompianist.
