Which Rach piano concerto to learn?
on: September 18, 2024, 05:01:06 PM
I am an undergraduate student wanting to learn either Rach 2 or Rach 3. I figure a concerto takes so much time to learn, so I must pick wisely. And if I had to learn one in my life, it would have to be one of these two. I am pretty technically proficient: rep including Beethoven Waldstein, Chopin Ballades 134, Miroirs 2-4, Rach op 39 no 5, however, I'm aware that these concerti, especially the Rach 3, are a step up. I go back and forth between which I like more, and I like both for different reasons: Rach 2 sentimental, etc- Rach 3 exciting, etc. At the end of the day, which should I learn? Which would I get more out of? Which is
worth
grinding for? For context: I am NOT a full-time music student, I am a premed student amongst other things, and don't have time to practice hours a day. I also want to be able to learn lots of other repertoire while I'm still a student. As far as time constraints go, I would like to have the piece learned in two years, but I have no end goal with it and will probably never play it with an orchestra. Thanks so much.

If you are not a full time pianist i dont think u have to think that much about the thought. I think overall the second one technically is easier, but musically i cant compare them. U dont have any risk, learn what u want more, and have fun with it. My idea would be to ask some of your pianist friend to play the orchestra part on the piano. It can be an amazing experience to play it like that, éven without orchestra its amazing

Rach 2nd. Another one that could work for your level and time of commitment is the "Warsaw Concerto"

I'd also recommend the 2nd. Also if you're still an undergrad it's too early to talk as if you're only going to learn one concerto in your life. I'm sure you'll get to learn the 3rd too at some point and the 2nd will have been good preparation.
Also Music Minus One have the orchestra part for both so you can play along, including a half speed recording.
