The Quiet Revolutionary of the Piano – Fauré’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

In the pantheon of French music, Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) often seems a paradox—an innovator cloaked in restraint, a Romantic by birth who shaped the contours of modern French music with quiet insistence. Piano Street now provides sheet music for his complete piano works: a body of music that resists spectacle, even as it brims with invention and brilliance. Read more

Gottschalk pieces
on: September 27, 2024, 10:08:00 PM
Does anyone play any Louis Gottschalk?

I would like to learn a piece of his ... something interesting but not too time consuming (ie difficult), was thinking The Banjo, would like to hear about other of his pieces that are about this length and this difficulty (or easier) (the banjo was just by someone in my group, so I should pick something different).  I looked at Bamboula as well but that is bit longer and more difficult than I'm looking for atm.

thanks!

< The Dying Poet >

Thank you for responding!  Sounds like a Mendelssohn Song Without Words, even a similar title.  I was hoping to get something with those wonderful "african" rhythms we find in The Banjou and Bamboula, something upbeat.

There are quite a few - - I've only heard about 3 of these:

<Anthony Olson: Carnival of Venice>

Regarding Olson:  Yes, kind of amusing to watch those flailing arms.  Not sure why he didn't take those cascading 3rds with 2 hands... one hand isn't really pulling off the effect ...

Yes ive played many of this works when I was younger, I had a book of his which had many of his pieces.

Probably his easiest work I found is: Morte (She Is Dead) Lamentation, Op.60.

I've dabbled with Souvenir de Porto Rico which is fun and upbeat. It's middle of the road difficulty and although I didn't properly learn it, it would have been easy to memorise because it's repetitive.

Thanks for the suggestions.
He wrote a Banjo No 2, published as opus 82 - that might be a good piece to do.  It's longer and perhaps more difficult, has more of that European romanticism ala Liszt.

Explored the following works by Gottschalk when I was helping my my daughter to prepare her diploma exam by running through the syllabus.
(a) Souvenir de Porto Rico (Marche des Gibaros) Op 31
(b) Souvernirs d'Andalousie, Caprice de concert sur la cana Op 22
(c) The Banjo Op 15
All three are pretty decent. By comparison, (a) is easiest to learn and master.

It is nice.  Doesn't have the "african / caribbean" rhythms I'm looking for but enjoyed listening to it.
