Help with passage from Beethoven 28th sonata
on: October 01, 2024, 03:11:30 AM
How are you supposed to play this passage at speed? I have most of 28 decent, and I'm working on the finale now, but this one passage is horrible. Specifically I can never reliably play the left hand thirds at speed. I've tried a lot of different fingerings and nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how to play this passage?

I played this years ago in grad school and can’t quite remember, but I’m pretty sure I found a way to split the thirds and use both hands. I’ll check my score and see if I wrote the fingerings in.

Thumb to slide down from Bb to A.
Thumb to move a bit sideway like glissando from A to G.
Use RH to help is also a sneaky, smart choice.

Could be a technical issue rather than a fingering issue. You need to be very supple AND have highly coordinated fingers to play fast thirds well. Both of those things you typically need to work for. Try working on some technical exercises involving thirds for a couple of months and see if this suddenly seems a lot easier. It just might.
