Scarlatti K69 Hashimoto edition
on: October 02, 2024, 04:13:03 PM
Hello friends - a question about this beautiful sonata.

I just noticed that the Hashimoto edition has this as C minor, but the other editions  - eg the Budapest one say F minor.
With lots of flats and naturals in both editions the music is essentially the same, but there are differences, eg bar 10.
Anybody has any idea what is going on here?

Try to compare to the Vol. 2 of the Ricordi edition edited by Emilia Fadini, this is IMHO the most accurate edition right now, better than Henle (who did not publish K.69 anyway AFAIK).

That is a really good recommendation. You are correct that K69 is not in the Henle edition. As it happens I do have Vol2 of the Fadini edition but it starts at K90 so I should get Vol1.

I had a long term plan to stop buying Scarlatti books but hey  :) ...

BTW as I said before this piece is really beautiful but not technically demanding.

In some Renaissance and early Baroque music the relative minor was not written as it is today. So G minor might be written with a key signature of one flat, with the flatted sixth degree of the scale (Eb) shown whenever it occurred. Scarlatti's notation of a piece in F minor with a key signature of only three flats might reflect that tradition.

BTW, Fadini recorded all sonatas, you might try to find her recording of K69 on YouTube.

Thank you so much brogers70 for your insight. I think that is exactly what is happening here. It is however notable that even taking into account all the flats and naturals, there are small differences (eg bar 10, there may be more).

Thank you also kosulin. I had never actually listened to Fadini - it is actually really really good so I will definitely check these out a bit more.
