Nocturne op 48 no 1 LH chords
on: November 25, 2024, 03:58:50 AM
Ok, do I roll these (the ones that aren’t marked as so)? That’s the rule right? The ones on measures 27 onward… How does Chopin expect me to reach these? Or maybe he doesn’t.
Right now I’m rolling them, but I would like to know if removing a note on some of the bigger ones is okay.
No, the attached picture is not the sheet music I am using, it is too blurry for me but it looks better to screenshot it than take a picture of a printed one.

If your LH can't reach a 10th, then roll it. Better to do that than drop out a note.

The tenths are easy enough, problem is after that, 14ths, 16ths? Chopin, I think I need to talk to him about this problem he has. I heard he’s a bit busy though.
I’ll keep rolling them.

Roll would tend to fit the character of the entire section. There is nowhere it says do not roll.
The other option would be to break the chord, as in bass then chord. However, I think roll fits the passage better. It is a slow lyrical section, there is time to roll and fit all the notes in, no need to omit notes here. Larger chord and more notes means you need to adjust the timing of the roll accordingly.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

I do think his instructions are a bit too sparse here to be unambigous. My reading is:
Roll from the bottom note of the left hand to the top note of the right hand when the arpeggio line says so
Roll each chord in each hand simultaneously when there are two arpeggio lines that say so.
Roll the left hand but not the right hand when there only is an arpeggio line in the left hand and the right hand can be played without rolling.
When no arpeggio line, roll every chord that is too large to play together, but never from bottom of left hand to top of right hand unless explicity indicated as mentioned above.
Hoep that helps.
