What are they called?!?!
on: February 27, 2005, 02:53:57 PM
Does anybody know what one of those things called that are sometimes on tables in posh houses or at dinner parties, which are Metal/Silver - they are like a platter with a large dome shaped lid and is usually pulled off to "Dinner is served"! Usually in films with pig's heads in or a very large game bird.

Please tell me if you know - I need one for a Ghost walk soon but can't buy one until I know what they are called!!

Thanks

Will

Those are called "Grand, silver, late Victorian entrée domes" :P

You must have a lot of money if you want to get one of those for a parade.

large serving plate with domed cover.  you can get one at a thrift store and polish it up.  surprisingly good silver can be obtained from estate sales also, but for what you are looking for, a thrift store sounds good.  if you buy one (for real) you have to keep them covered  (big mistake of mine:  displaying silver)  it usually comes in a velvet or soft cover. when not using, keep it in the cover.

when you combine perfectly polished silver with perfect flowers from the garden, you've got romance on a high level.  i say, buy the real thing as you can.  and, when buying a set make sure all the pieces are there before walking off.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

now i will go listen to vaughn williams 5th symphony.  maybe he wasn't the symphonic artist that he was song writer.

copeland was right (at least about the beginning - which i heard).  it reminds me of mozart's cadenza in 'a musical joke.'  there is no counterpoint and everything starts and ends together.

but, say, in church, or in palestrinas time - people were used to contemplating as a pastime and really listening to a line.  intricacies of tuning, and breath control were standards, probably.  so, if one is in a 'zone' of meditation or prayer, i suppose the cow could be substituted for words.  i wonder if vaughn williams had specific words in mind for his 'symphony.'

ok sorry to get so carried away, but ralph (he hated to be called ralph and much preferred 'rafe') composed the 5th symphony when he was 70!  pretty good.  and he went on to compose for 15 more years.  the fifth symphony was a sort of meditative nunc dimittis (whatever that is).  he went on to compose 'sinfonia antarctica.'  does that tell you where he was going with his music?  i happen to LOVE his poems set to song - and so forgive him if his symphonies aren't quite thrilling enough.  he is a romantic even if his symphonies don't sound like it (no sturm und drang).

ps  nunc dimittis refers to a christian hymn using the words of simeon in luke 2:29-32 'nunc dimmittis servum tuum' or 'now let thy servant depart.'  considering rafe's age, maybe he thought he was dying (only to live for 15 more years).  who knows?

then again, maybe he read the short story of roal dahl

Ehem, panonut, are you talking to yourself? I mean, are you posting to yourself? If so, you should start your own thread. For example: "pianonut talking to herself - don't disturb..."  :D :D

there are other symptoms, too, but they are somewhat masked.  i cannot listen to music without wanting to know the name of the piece and the composer.  if i cannot find this information out i get frustrated by the radio station or dj (if they do not say all of the information and go on to the next piece without identifying it).

Many radio stations have a list of all the pieces they play, with exact time, on their web sites. This has helped me a lot in the past to expand my CD collection. Some stations have those lists for coming shows, so that one can tune in when something interesting shows up.

thanks!  it's just a lot of work esp. when in the car listening while driving.  but, recitals are easier because you can just look at the program.  that is another symptom:  reading the program from front to back (notes, bios, ad's, and recital program - the entirety).  there must be something wrong with me. help!
