any ideas for me?!
on: February 28, 2005, 08:10:48 AM
hello all!
well yay to uni we started back today, had an etching class and we've got this project to do in which we had to pick out 2 words from a box and have to draw something to do with these words. my are 'silent phobia', so i want to try and get as many random ideas possible because i hate these sorts of things and tend to stick myself in a box. so any visual ideas you have to do with this- be as conceptual and randomly clever as you like- would be most appreciated! thanks all!

Well "silent phobia" makes me think of someone so wrought with anxiety that they can't even speak. So maybe you could have a portrait of a terrified face without a mouth? The scene would have to look really dark and ominous I think.... eh... I've never been any good at art.  :-\

a piano, that once the lid is opened, reveals slices of oranges instead of keys (disrupting not only the music, but the color scheme).  this would go along with the evil orange idea.

a piano with no bench...at the time of final exams.  you have to go and look to find your bench, but by the time you get back with a bench, you've lost exam time and gotten an F.

a piano with no lid.  it is raining (evil oranges?) and they continue to pile up on the strings until no sound comes out.  it is your first concert appearance and you have to cancel due to evil oranges (or the weather).

the oranges turn out to be evil because prokofiev wanted to scare you with recurrent nightmares about his love for them (three oranges - by the way - what was he thinking?) forcing you to wonder why three?  couldn't he be satisfied with one?  what would make a man love an orange so much.  did he draw them or something and then fall in love with them?  what is this all about?
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

Well, that makes me think of that nightmare everyone's had at some point: where something awful is happening to you and you try to scream but nothing comes out. What about someone in the middle of crowded street screaming with terror but everyone's just walking past, going about their business, completely oblivious?
Well, I like it!

Maybe your silent phobia could be the fear of not being able to come up with anything to draw. ;D  Then you could hand in a blank piece of paper as your final "drawing" of it.  Hey, you'll either get an A+ or an F.
Don't let your music die inside you.

well, if you haven't enough good ideas (i liked the last two posts a lot!)
you could etch a 'dead' piano (upside down with the legs up in the air).  post mortem: silent phobia is silence

I imagine a woman curled up in the fetal position with something crawling all around and over her - these could be something symbolic, and it would be really cool to do it from a floor level perspective where the woman is closer to the vanishing point and the entire foreground is filled with spiders or tiny people or the subject of whatever phobia you choose.

hey this is cool! thanks all you've got some bril ideas. musakian i actually had exactly the same thought as you!and i'm quite liking that
pianonut- whilst your idea is brilliant, i love the whole oranges thing , but it's way too complex for me to etch! i like the dead piano though thats funny i could put an interesting concept behind that.
jas i like your idea too, i'll consider it, provided i can be bothered etching a mass of people together
and torp, very cool, reminds me of when a music lecturer told us about setting an assignment to write about something like the concept behind 4'33, i can't quite remember what it was, and someone handed in a blank sheet of paper!
hmm i'm not sure how well that'll go down...
thanks everyone, keep the posts coming cos it's super!
