Most of Medtner’s pieces require lots of legato. For something more modern sounding check out Samuil Feinberg.

BTW, you can find the complete works of Medtner online (the 12-volume Soviet edition from 1959-1960s): https://nikolaimedtner.ru/scores/
I guess it is in public domain now.

I think he's disinterested in researching a large number of pieces, what's to be handed a few...

Why specifically 20th century, if you don't mind me asking?

much of messiaen requires legato, slowly moving chords. Try je dors. You can;t just rely on the pedal.

I prefer beroff to loriod on this one, at least. Greater sense of stillness. loriod would wake the baby up.

Are you thinking specifically of pieces in a 20th century style? I.e. with more "modern" harmony?

Thanks for suggestions!
Yes I am looking for pieces with more modern harmony.
of course Bach is very useful and a pillar of piano technique but I am just not into that.
i have started several times but failed out of lack of interest in the sound of that era.
Would be also great to hear suggestions on more modern contrapuntal writing.
thanks

Have you listened to Shostakovich's preludes and fugues?
