The Quiet Revolutionary of the Piano – Fauré’s Complete Piano Works Now on Piano Street

In the pantheon of French music, Gabriel Fauré (1845–1924) often seems a paradox—an innovator cloaked in restraint, a Romantic by birth who shaped the contours of modern French music with quiet insistence. Piano Street now provides sheet music for his complete piano works: a body of music that resists spectacle, even as it brims with invention and brilliance. Read more

pieces like scriabin fantasy and medtner tragica
on: July 05, 2025, 03:40:12 AM
hi all,

Im picking out my romantic slot right now. Im immensely drawn to firey passionate pieces like the scriabin fantasy and medtner sonata tragica. Is there any other stuff like this that I might’ve missed? I’ve already looked at most chopin and liszt, and the rach sonata 2 is a little long (and difficult lol).

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Granados' Goyescas has wonderful piano writing. I don't know if it's "fiery" in the same way as Scriabin and Medtner, but it has some exhilarating rhythms and textures. The fifth movement, El Amor y la Muerte, is quite passionate.

Also check out Albéniz.

yes!! I love the spanish impressionists (?). Imo its a bit too far past the high romantic period but I was debating whether or not to choose triana or lavapies for a long time. I settled for alborada del gracioso instead but i regret it sometimes :(

I would consider Granados still a late romantic, like Medtner and Scriabin (besides those three and Rachmaninoff, I have trouble thinking of turn-of-the-century Romantics that I like... I'll have to keep thinking). Albéniz is definitely closer to the Impressionists though.

Oh, there's a late Romantic Russian/Ukrainian composer who has some nice sonatas in the vein of early Scriabin... I can't remember his name at the moment. Maybe someone can help me out.

The Scriabin fantasy is very tricky, and hard to learn/memorise.

Are you perhaps thinking of Bortkiewicz?

No, I was thinking of Viktor Kosenko, but Bortkiewicz is good too.

You may be thinking of Samuil Feinberg.  He was inspired by Scriabin.  His 3rd sonata is exceptional.
Nikolai Roslavets is usually also mentioned along side Feinberg.
