Pair Piece
on: November 10, 2025, 12:01:44 AM
I’m currently playing a Bach French Suite and March of the Dwarves, both of which i’d like to play for recital. Can someone recommend a short(ish) lyrical piece around the difficulty of the pieces above and from a different era?
Current Repertoire
BACH - French Suite No. 6 in E Major, BWV 817, I. Allemande
GRIEG - March of the Dwarfs, Op. 54, No. 4
HAYDN - Sonata in D Major, Hob. XVI:37, I. Allegro con brio

Perhaps one of the slower Beethoven bagatelles?

Possibly. I’ve also looked at some Haydn / Mozart Adagios and some contemporary era preludes (Shostakovich / Scriabin). My teacher has mentioned American Preludes (Ginastera) but I honestly haven’t looked at it. I will look at the Beethoven Bagatelles though.

How about Darius Milhaud's Corcovado, the 7th movement of this suite Saudades do Brasil. It's bitonal, easy to listen to, not too hard, and quite different in style from the other pieces you mentioned. It starts at 10:56 in the video below.

Is there possibly a shorter one? I believe the concert may have a time limit. Love this piece though.

OP here. I think i’m going with the 2nd movement of the Pathetique Sonata. I know it’s pretty overplayed but I like it a lot and it’s near my level.

A fine choice. I've never cared whether a piece is popular or overplayed. If I like it, I like it, and if I've wanted to play it, I've played it. Most popular pieces are popular for a reason, after all - because they are fabulous pieces.
