i'm going on competition...
on: March 10, 2005, 06:33:10 PM
next monday,wish me luck!

do you have your own rituals before competitions or concerts? i eat tons of milka chocolate... ;D
if you have tips how to better concentrate i'd like to hear

do you like competitions? some people say that you can't ''measure art'', but i think competitions generally are good thing.  they force me to practise more, and i can compare myself with others. they affect positive on my motivation

what do you think, what are good things that competitions can bring, and what are the bad ones?

which competition are you going to be in?  i hope you do well!

depending on where you live--keeping your hands warm may be really important.  i would bring gloves, scarf, hat to keep your body temp. what you want it to be.  i've not really been in any competitions (so this is just me) but when i play with others i try to start focusing before the last person is done.  it doesn't work for me to wait until they are finished (i look at my music one last time and start the piece in my head).  i sometimes get sort of meditative and really relaxed.  as you said, milk does help make you relaxed.  ALSO potassium (in bananas)  so go have a milkshake.  it give you a bit of extra strength with the sugar, too.

i'm really into diet and exercise as well.  if you are leaving in a couple days, go work out at the gym a lot (as well as practice) or go running, swimming, whatever you do.  this will help your confidence level, too.  sometimes when you hear someone really good right before yourself, you ask yourself 'why am i here'
but if you are really in good mind set - you don't say things like that to yourself.  you say 'i'm HERE and i'm going to do it' (my french music prof. compared it to a bull fight)  you basically are going up against the piano (sometimes you don't know if it will be stiff or easy to play - in tune or slightly out - so the first few bars you get a feel for it and have to adjust everything - including pedalling)  once you are into your piece - don't get psyched out by small mistakes.  KEEP ON GOING  just like in ice-skating - if they stayed on their **** they would not be very interesting to look at.  jumping back in wherever you have memory spots working is good.  don't repeat the section - go forward.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

I've noticed that I tend to practice more when preparing for a competition.
