Jools Holland / Rhythm and Blues Question
on: March 12, 2005, 03:40:41 PM
Hello Everybody

I went and saw Jools Holland the other day and I became fascinated by the syncopated dischords and all the really high riffs and notes he played.

It thus begs the questions how do you know what notes to play (with right hand)becasue whenever i try it, it sounds wrong and weird!

try https://www.cpconnection.com/FunStuff/Music/Midi.htm and go to "Rhythm and Blues 2" Midi for the best example

Thanks

Will

Hi Will,
I was big into Jools in the early '90s and saw him live many times. Then I got into jazz, and his boogie woogie thing seemed a little one-dimensional. But I've always admired the way he can sit in and play with just about anyone. He is an awesome player however you cut it.

If that was you playing Rhythm & Blues 2, I'd say well done and you're well on the way! Most of the stuff he plays is largely based on blues scales with some diminished scales (or rather a lot of V7th b9 chords). But I haven't really checked him out since I got into theory. So you could get hold of some theory books and play around with scales until you hear the notes he's choosing.

Then again, you could just listen to the recordings and try to imitate him. I'm pretty sure he's said that's how he learned. The hardest thing, I think, is not so much the notes as replicating the amazing rhythmic drive he generates. Just thinking about his pounding left hand makes mine hurt.

Have fun and keep us posted on your progress!
