I have actually seen him live (he died a few years ago) in Brazil (my wife is Brazilian). But I will be truthful here: I do not particularly like his music (or Bossa Nova for that matter). I guess I heard too much of it, and now it is too much of a sameness to me. my three favourite brazilian (popular) composers are Egberto Gismonti (he is quite amazing - if you want some difficult impressive stuff try him - unfortunately I am not sure there is any sheet music available that does him justice - he is a usperb imporviser), Hermetho Paschoal and Wagner Tiso. They are all a cross between jazz, brazilian folk music and classical music (Gismonti was trained as a classical pianist). Again, the problem is finding sheet music that does them justice, rather that the usual watered down arrangements.
Good luck.
Best wishes,
Bernhard.
