Uncertainty about what to pick...
on: March 17, 2005, 03:21:12 PM
I'm preparing a recital with a friend of mine who is a violist. Here is our program for piano and viola :

Schubert - Sonata in a (early romantic, rather lyrical piece)
Brahms - Sonata in f, op. 120 #1 (late romantic, passionate and brilliant)
Bruch - Romance (late romantic, lyrical and passionate)
Clarke - Morpheus (early XX century, English impressionism, smooth and mysterious)

Now we haven't decided of the order of the pieces yet. However, I plan on inserting somewhere some solo piano pieces, for about 10-15 minutes, but I'm not sure what works would fit nicely into such a program. I was thinking of playing several Scriabin preludes. Then I thought it wouldn't match with the rest, so I thought maybe a couple of Debussy's preludes. And then I changed again, so I'm not sure...

So, can anyone let me know what pieces you think would work great with what I've got ? Thanks.

Isn't that a really long program anyway? Maybe not, but it looks like it.

I think Debussy would be fine, but start on a smooth one after that Romanze. Would not do Scriabin there. Build the Debussy from smooth to lively, that would provide enough contrast, and would be a nice link to the English piece.A composer like Delius might work also, or  may-be Bridge.
Sorry, cannot help you with titles there, I am just familiar with other music by those composers and think they would fit too.
