Rachmaninoff 3rd Piano Concerto on DVD or VHS.
on: March 22, 2005, 02:46:48 AM
Can anyone suggest the best choice for a DVD/VHS recording of the Rach 3.

Thanks
Theodopolis
Does anyone else here think the opening of Liszt's 'Orage' (AdP - Suisse No.5) sounds like the Gymnopedie from Hell?

By Horowitz, you guys mean that Mehta 1978 one in Carnegie, right?

That's one messy performance, IMO. Funny sounding piano too.

I am not sure what year the one I have is. I believe the conductor is mehta. I enjoyed the dvd. where is it messy? I haven't listened to it too many times to notice I guess. Besides, I still prefer his 30 recording.

Yea, I don't really like that performance, but other Horwoitz's Rach3 performance are great, for eg the Reiner 1951 one.

Actually, I like the Janis Rach3 video the best (3rd mvt only)

I second that, Janis video is one of the most amazing video recordings of this piece, (and it is true, unfortunately there is only the 3th. mov )

"only the 3rd movement" -- what a bummer!  Doesn't qualify.

That 3rd Movement by Janis, you mean the one from the Bell Telephone Hour DVD right? That's an amazing video - watch how fast his fingers are!

Yeah, but it's only the third movement. You need the whole thing for it to work! You can't have just one movement, it doesn't sound right.

I haven't heard the Janis, but in general I must agree that a mere fragment of a piece can do little more than whet one's appetite for the complete picture.  :-\

Perhaps if you actually heard it, you'd stop saying you need the entire concerto... :D

For excitment, I have Argerich's Rach3 video. Which is pretty exciting. It's the same performance as the one on DVD.

The Volodos is not bad, and the Rach2 video from prome is quite awesome.

Bolet has beautiful Sound.

Horowitz with Metha is dissapointing if u like his 1951 or 1978 performance.

Olga Kern is alright.

Lang Lang Rach3 has a lot of comedic value, but of course it sucks.

I have sevearl more Rach3 videos, but i can't remember now.

Well, I'm sure Rossini would say that we should listen to the entirety of his operas rather than just the overtures .....

Of course it's acceptable to limit yourself to one movement or one section ..... but invariably, you'll be missing out on the complete picture.  Everything has a context ......

No, there was never a commercial release of this video.

I would gladly trade with anyone if they have the Argerich Prokofiev 3rd video.
