which one would you pick
on: March 24, 2005, 03:38:45 AM
Would you rather have a teacher who is nice but not too personal, yet gets amazing results with her students at competitions and exams, or... would you rather have a totally encouraging, and fun teacher who ranks second in competition results?

Well, as long as you're still having enough fun learning with your first teacher, I'd go for him/her, coz for me it would be most important to become good, it's still great to have lessons with a cool person, but, well, I probably wouldn't want to miss out on being as good as I could be with the first teacher and you could probably still have lots of fun with the 1st teacher. But well, thats just me ..  ;)

I guess it depends on what we are actually getting out of working together.   Ultimately, I would hope to have a teacher that helps me grow as a person as well as a musician.  I don't think there is just one way to go about that... and I am not certain which one is more important when it comes to learning about music ?

Somebody with a deep kindness and compassion, yet a solid strength as well.  Encouragement is a definite plus, but only at the right times and in the right ways.  Honesty is of a huge value to me as well.  If I screwed up, I just want somebody to tell me out right.  Somebody who pushes me is good.  Somebody who figures out what makes me tick as a musician.  (at least this is how I am feeling right now, nothing sounds as good as it seems it could, before I actually say it).

I suppose it also depends on what exactly you mean by "personal".  I think that if I meet up with somebody who happens to love music in similar ways as I, one would hardly have to try even, for the connection to be somewhat personal.

So which one does this all fall under ?  he he he... ha ... heh

Hmmm.... I don't think I am answering your question very well  :-

i'd have to hear themselves play, or at least their students play. competition results aren't too relevant, but hearing myself as many as possible of their students would help me decide.

whichever inspires me the most. i prefer more friendly teachers who i could have an emotional meltdown in front of and they wouldn't look at me strangely. but basically i'm not in it to win so i'd be quite happy with 2nd in the ranks, cos chances are it'd probably make me less stressed which is always a good thing!

i think i'd like a happy medium somewhere in there. i have two teachers currently. one is more like a personal counselor and is a family friend and very very sweet. and the other makes me practice, lol. it works fine for me.

Your teachers don't mind you having two of them at once?  Doesn't it become a hinderance when they have opposing interpretation ideas?

I currently have 3 myself. One is a complete jerk and am forced to be with at the time being. The other two don't mind one bit that I work with both of them. In fact, it usually happens that they work on different repertoire. (I didn't plan it this way though it just happened).

back the question. I would rather have number 1 by and large. The teacher that is a complete whack-job use to be a real good friend. I think that things became too close friendship wise and that caused all hell to break loose.

Well, I have
#2, but I've been watching #1's students in awe.  Yet my teacher truly is #1's greatest competition (if this were a competition which it isn't, but you know what I mean).  She's brought me all the way from the beginning and we really hit it off.  I'm not planning on switching unless she moves away or something, but I'm curious to hear from you--loyalty or success?
