Hotel pieces!
on: March 27, 2005, 06:54:56 PM
I am thinking of maybe playing piano in a hotel for a part-time thing and I was wondering if anyone has any idea as to what kind of pieces I could maybe play, as I really don't know what kind of stuff people play in hotels? Any suggestions would be great, but my technique is not 100% yet, so keep it reasonable.  I'm learning pieces such as Chopin's Scherzo no.2, Etudes no.4 & 5, Liszt's Liebestraum no.3 and others aswell, just to give you an idea of my standard.

save your etudes for recital (or special occasion when someone falls down the stairs) and don't put a lot of effort into making the hotel music 'recital music.'  just background music is what they like.  soft, subdued, elegant (or jazzy).  i suppose if it were during a holiday you would want music to match.  i once played at the sheraton on valentines day and played romantic love songs.  that was fun. and, i got a tip that made it worthwhile too.  i would change your music from season to season and just play a bit of what you are doing for your piano lessons, and combine it with whatever the restaurant specializes (say french - then couperin, scarlatti, faure).  people don't want indigestion from a something too fast or too  loud.
do you know why benches fall apart?  it is because they have lids with little tiny hinges so you can store music inside them.  hint:  buy a bench that does not hinge.  buy it for sturdiness.

*conveniently performs the final run of Chopin's Revolutionary as someone tumbles down the stairs, and the four ending chords perfectly in time with the grand flourish of them bonking to the floor*

You'll find it useful to have a number of pop tunes and jazz standards in your repertoire. A short list of tunes that I frequently get requests for are: My Way, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, New York New York, Linus and Lucy (Peanuts theme), Fly Me to the Moon, My Funny Valentine, etc. I think you'll find that for a situation like this, people will repsond more to this type of repertoire than classical pieces. Plus, you'll make much more money in tips if you can play requests for people or play pieces that most people will know. I got a $100 tip once for playing Joni Mitchell's "Help Me" after some big shot requested it. Even more contemporary stuff like Beatles tunes or that Titanic song (ugh) are great to know. Slightly more eclectic stuff is good too. I've had Radiohead's "Karma Police" requested on a couple occasions. Basically, the broader your scope the better.

Peace,
Bri

Cheers for the advice guys! I wasn't really thinking of performing my Chopin Etudes or any of my solo repertoire that was just to give you lot an understanding of where my standard's at so you could recommend some tunes.
