Pieces i can learn at the moment.
on: March 29, 2005, 09:49:18 AM
Currently i am in Grade 8 ABRSM.
I am glad the new pieces in grade 8 suits me. I love most of them especially Beethoven's sonata op 90 in E minor.
Besides these exam pieces i would like to learn more challenging pieces.
Any suggestion ( from chopin, scarlatti etc..)
Don't know if chopin sherzo no2 op31 is too difficult for me?
it goes fine for first few pages and it was quite easy. maybe it becomes more and more difficult as it goes?

Thanks for advice and suggestions.

sight-read through it and you will find out real quick if you can play it or not.

No. It's not all that hard.

It's a good list, I thought. Beethoven op90 is one of my favourite sonatas too, I'm not so sure about op79. If you like the ABRSM list and you're looking for more advanced pieces, why not take a look at the diploma and higher repertoire lists? Learn the rest of op90 and you'll have a diploma piece already. I love the 2 Brahms rhapsodies op79: no.1 (Bm) is harder but no.2 (Gm) tends to be a bit overplayed. You could also do worse than look at a couple of the Rachmaninoff preludes. Op32 no.12 (G#m) is lovely and not all that hard though they seem to have upgraded it - I played it for my grade 8 many years ago but it's now on the diploma list ::) As for the Chopin scherzo, if you're doing grade 8 it's technically within your grasp but you will find parts of it rather challenging.

A few days ago, i bought a scarlatti CD played by Horowitz. When i listened to Sonata K54 L241. It is very beutiful and lyrical.

It sounds nice and i would like to learn it as well. Just don't know about it's grade. Is it manageable for me?

Maybe some exposure to baroque music would be nice. Try the Bach's French Suites. They're awfully beautiful and challenging for students at your level.

Hi all!
You often talk about a list of pieces for every grade. Some say its a new list every year. Please fill me in...  And where do I find this list?   Have a ball   /Jono
Listening to Debussy is like having a midnight bath in a lukewarm augustlake

Op. 79? what? If that isn't the worst Beethoven sonata I don't know what is.

I think it's a nice piece, not at all bad.
I will say though when I wrote the above message I was thinking of op. 78, not 79. :P
I'm just now starting 78.. it's fantastic. Do you like that one?

"Not so bad," eh?  :P
I heard that it was Beethoven's favorite until he wrote the Hammerklavier Sonatas.
