just because i like lis(z)ts
on: March 29, 2005, 11:01:29 PM
i recently bought the music and a recording (cziffra) of the later hungarian rhapsodies(9-15) and one that has 16-19

before this i had only heard the first 8

i found that i like the laters even better, plus some seem a lot thatn the famous n.2 or n.6

whats your opinion, whats your favorite out of the set?

or, how would you order them by difficulty(no, practical reason here, just for the heck of it)

Actually I don't really like the studio recording of the Hungarian Rhapsodies by Cziffra.

I actually quite like Dichter's recording of them.

Of course the live Cziffra is a different story.

Horowitz's arrangement of the HR 12 is awesome too.(I think it's pretty hard to find)

Musically and technically,  2 and 6 are by far my favorite HR's.  Never a dull moment.   Liszt at his most exhilarating.   :o

id say it doesnt have the liveliness of the cziffra though, but it does have a good hungarian feel

Yes, I have the Jando recording as well, and it is very rough and Hungarian sounding.  I actually prefer it to most other recordings.

i have him playing complete haydn sonatas and mozart PCs. here is an interesting fact about jeno. He tends to hum/sling/shout out of tune ala Gould. Someone once noticed though that he doesn't do it when he is smoking a cigarette though. So now whenever he records the producer shove a pen in his mouth to keep him quiet. he calmly holds onto the pen like a little cancer stick. funny kinda

Wow, i'm surprised at the reaction to the Jando cd.

I have the full HR's by him, and for some reason, I don't enjoy his interpretations too much.  They all seem dry to me, but hey, maybe I just need another listen.
