Learning Jazz/Blues

What would you all suggest I do to start familiarizing myself with jazz and blues scales and technique, as well as improvisation? I know all the major/minor scales and have a grasp with most basic theory and jazz is something i've always loved and wanted to give a try. Any help you guys have to offer would be great.
Thanks!

Here's my blub from there...  I like the balance of the books.  Lots of jazz styles, a little history, etc.

A series that looks very useful is

Blues Keyboard

and

Jazz Keyboard

There are beginning, intermediate, mastering levels for each.  So six books listed up there.

published by Alfred.

Tricia Woods authored the first two levels for Blues Keyboard.  Merril Clark is listed for the Mastering level of Blues Keyboard.

I don't have the Jazz Keyboard books in front of me.

I haven't gone through these (yet), but they look very good.

I would just listen to a lot of it and absorb the bits you like into your own piano vocabulary.

I really love well for example, the piano in Eric Clapton's acoustic songs - in the background, and I don't know where to start to get that sort of sound. Are there scales I can practice or general basic progressions that everyone should know...

Thanks for bringing this up.  Sometimes the forum reads my mind.  I just saw the movie on Ray Charles Ronbinson and I decided I want to learn how to play jazz and blues.  I used to sit in on a jazz band for awhile, with a friend of mine.  He was always trying to get me to play but I rarely had the nerve.  These are good suggestions here, thanks.

sincerely,
