what do you mean?  My teacher has me take my pulse when I play.  But sometimes when I am nervous it is faster so I am not sure it's a good idea everytime.  My friends use the metronome a lot too.  but it's always a little confusing to me but I like it also.

How can you measure speed accurately with the metronome? My teacher never taught me it; she just expects me to magically know everything she's talking about and every piece she wants me to learn.

Look at the time signature at the beginning of the piece.  Then look how the notes are distributed and set your tempo accordingly. If it is in 4/4 time with mostly quarter and eighth notes you will probably want to set your metronome to tick once per two counts, twice per bar. This will keep you strictly on time but allows for a little rubato.
