PIANO FORUM IS MOVING ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN!
on: April 02, 2005, 11:05:47 PM
We are currenly moving this website to another server in a different part of the world, more precisely from the very north of Sweden to Dallas (US).
The aim is to do this without interrupting the service for a few days, which is the usual time it takes for a domain move to propagate all over the world.

We will take the site down for about 15 minutes starting today at 00.25 (GMT) and copy the database containing all posts and member info to the new server.
(This means if you try to write a message around 00.20 it is likely you will not be able to post it.)
Then the forum will be connected to the new server while the website is still on the old server. This will lead to a significant slow down of the website but it should work OK anyway. Then the domain will be moved to the new server but since this usually takes 24-48 hours depending on from where in the world you visit our website some of us will get to the old server and some to the new one during the Sunday to Tuesday. Luckily we will use the same database so all postings will be up to date on both servers.

I have set up a notice  just below the main website menu telling which server you are on. It would be great if you, as soon as you get to the new server, post here to tell if it works fine or not.

Sit tight!

Cool!
I changed the nameservers just ten minutes ago so they are currently propagating around the world, but I did't expect it to be so fast!
Were in the world are you? Here in Stockholm the pianoforum.net domain is still directed to the old server.

For all of you that still are on the old server (I guess most of us are) everything goes really slow. This is because for every click you do you are requesting the page from the server i Sweden and then the server needs to contact the database in Dallas through some 15 000 km transatlantic cable and when getting the reply it is sending you the webpage for the link you had clicked.

I'm in New Jersey.  I noticed after I posted that it only says the new server for the front page of the forum.  It seems, for me, if the url starts with www, then it says it's the new server:
https://www.pianoforum.net/smf/index.php#2

without the "www", it says it's the old server.

This is strange... I'm back on the old server again (at least I don't see the notice anymore). How could this happen?

For a while I was oscillating between servers, depending on the board I was accessing. I was also unable to post messages. I sent Nils an email about it, and things have improved: I am now on the new server and I am able to post, but I still seem unable to logout.

It can change between the two for a while depending on how your request is routed on the Internet so this is nothing strange.
But if you don't see any notice at all then you must have some cached old version of the page. Click around and refresh the page to see if it makes any difference.
You should definately get either the "old server" or "new server" message.

The problems you are experiencing Berhard, is most likely because you can't be perfectly logged in to the forum on both servers at the same time. The logout issue is an old problem that I hope to solve rather soon.

Regarding the speed, the old server is also a quite fast machine so it is just during the propagation time you get a temporary slow down at the old server.
After the move is fully completed the most noticable difference will be that the closer you are to the server the faster response time you will get (we are talking about fractions of a second) but also the search feature will be considerably faster than before.

The main reason for the move is that as we will now be on a dedicated server that gives a lot of freedom because of the generous amount of bandwidth we have.
This will soon give you some really exciting additions to the website...

Don't worry, you will get to the new server sooner or later!
The www should now always be there so it is not a bad sign at all.

I'm on the new server. However, I have to login everytime I start a new browser session, even when I check the box to keep me logged in.

Make sure you are using www in the URL when first visiting the forum.
The forum is now set to log you in at www.pianoforum.net but on the old server it was just pianoforum.net. Cookies work in a way that they keep you logged in to a single domain and the above mentioned URL:s are regarded as different domains.

Try this and let me know if it makes any difference. If not try to set your browser to a lower security/privacy setting to make it more generous ín its cookie handling.

The new server is actually a bit faster than the old but if you are in UK or anywhere close to Sweden you will get slower responses from the new one since it is placed in Dallas, US.
If you for some reason are very interested in server speed you can look at the very bottom of the page to see how long time it took the server to create the page. The remaining time from your click to when you actually see the page is for transfering the data and this depends on your Internet connection and distance to the server.

I am sometimes fiddling around a bit with the database and you can then experience a slow down for a couple of seconds or if many visitors makes a search at the same time this will also be noticable.

SDL, how many seconds is "ages"? Do you always get this delay when loggin in or was it just a temporary problem. For how long do you generally have wait for a forum page to load?
All detals are welcome because they make it easier for me to localize and solve any possible problems!

What will the new developments on the site be?  sounds? video?   Speed?

How did this change come about?  Why move across the ocean?

Just curious.
