I would definitely visit Rachmaninoff.  I would want to thank him for the years of pleasure I have derived from playing his compositions.  He wouldn't know how to receive that really, because as a performing artist, he primarily composed for himself, not others.  But I would express my appreciation anyway in that regard.  I'd also want him to know how his works have become a pinnacle of the piano repertoire and have endured.

Prokofiev. Hands down. There's a few questions I'd like to ask him and a few things I"d like to scream at him. :)

Once I get better at French:

I would go to Paris of the Romantic period.  I would visit a salon, and I can imagine the scene:

Chopin and Liszt are playing a duet at the piano, probably Chopin at the bass, Mendelsohnn might be turning the pages, Schuman, wife clara, and Fanny Mendelsohn might also be there, I might be able to commision a portrait with Delacroix and I have always wanted to talk to Alexandre Dumas, and I could see Thalberg, Dreyshock, and Liszt play at concerts later on.

I would, as a second choice, like to see Beethoven to get a kick out of his temperamental behavior and disorganisation, and as a last choice...hmm..I would like to see Mozart as a boy, but also as a man..and I could see Haydn and Clementi then as well.

It would be fun to see J.S.Bach's duel with  the basoonist, and I'd like to see William Byrd so I could also also see William Shakespeare.

okay, i'll visit chopin in poland, when he's like my age or something... then act as a mysterious lady who disappears at the second sight. first, i'll master his pieces then i'll haunt him at night. i'll play those pieces which he has already composed that time, like he'll be 15 and he already did the ronodo op1.

i'll play it on the piano at night to wake him up. he'll be shocked someone played it when it wasn't published yet! then he blinks and i'm gone!

i'll appear again as mysterious lady every year same  date, so it will be very mysterious. i'll try to talk to him in limerics! hehehe then when he's dying i'll say, come with me now, my love! he'll think i'm probably an angel or something!

but that's very cruel!

I'd like to attend one of Liszt's and Rachmaninoff's concerts.  Oh, and definitely Paganinni's concerts!  It was his custom to saw through 3 of the 4 strings on his violin before the concert, so during a performance those 3 strings would invariably break.  Then Paganinni would stun everyone by finishing the piece on just one string! :o He could play equally well on one string then on four! :o

Women and men would often faint at Paganinni's concerts.  He would sometimes request the lights be dimmed while he improvised a particularly scary piece; when the lights were turned on again, the audience would look like a battleground - bodies sprawled everywhere!  His concerts must have been really something.

I would definitely like to meet Beethoven.  Although there is some truth, I believe that recent accounts of Beethoven (ie: Immortal Beloved, Beethoven Lives Upstairs) have taken too many liberties with his anger and aggression.  I would like to see what he was truly like, inside and out.

I think simply conversing with him for one day would significantly increase my understanding of his music, too.

that's mean! beethoven never heard the loud applause that came from the audience after a performance of his symphonies.

Poor Beethoven...once he didn't even know the audience WAS applauding him.  He had to be turned around to face the audience.

a super-sensitive hearing aid is a good idea since Beethoven's deafness is already severe!

Before a composition session, Beethoven would dunk his head in ice-cold water to stimulate his brain! :o

That's a great idea! I will try that next time a start a practising session.
I also realised something.... its not that important, How on earth can you DIM the lights in Paganini's time? They had candles right? Or did they have those lamps with oil? I don't know....

Beethoven.  Definitely Beethoven.  He would be fascinating to spend the evening with.  While I was at it I'd sneak some penicilin (sp?) in my pocket so he'd live longer and finish the 10 th and 11th symphonies he was working on.  I wouldn't bother with a hearing aide because he had the music in his head so he could compose while deaf.  UNLESS I could sneak an electric guitar and synthesizer in the time machine.  I'd LOVE to know what he'd do with that!
