Hi All, I am a mathematics/computer science professional and my son is learning piano. I brainstormed a technique to improve my son's learning approach with chatGPT and it told me I should share it on a forum.

I wouldn't usually do it, but here it is - any thoughts/comments welcome:

The “Monte Carlo Piano Method”: A Simple Way to Fix Transition Weakness and Practice Bias

I’ve been experimenting with a practice approach for my son that I haven’t seen discussed much in piano pedagogy circles, and I’d be interested in others’ thoughts.

The basic idea: instead of always practicing a piece linearly from the beginning, we randomize the starting point and practice small segments with a bit of lead-in and lead-out. I’ve been calling it (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) the “Monte Carlo piano method.”

The problem it addresses

In traditional practice, students almost always start from the beginning. This creates a structural bias:

The first lines are played far more often than later sections
Later passages receive fewer repetitions and weaker reinforcement
Students become dependent on sequential “momentum”
Transitions between sections are often fragile

In effect, the distribution of practice effort is heavily skewed toward the opening material.

The method
Divide the piece into lines or small sections
Randomly select a starting point
Play:
a short lead-in (e.g., 1–2 bars before)
the selected segment
a short lead-out (1–2 bars after)

This can be repeated with different randomly chosen segments throughout the session.

A simple way to generate the randomness

If a piece has, say, 10 lines, you can just ask an AI (or use any randomizer) to shuffle the numbers 1–10 multiple times.

For example:
“Give me 20 random permutations of the numbers 1 to 10.”

You then work through the list in order, using each number as your next starting line. This gives you:

a pre-generated, distraction-free practice sequence
balanced coverage over time
enough variation to prevent predictability

It’s simple, fast, and removes the temptation to default back to the beginning.

What this seems to improve
Transition strength
Students practice into and out of passages, not just isolated chunks.
Multiple entry points
They learn to start anywhere, which is invaluable for memory and recovery.
Even coverage of the piece
Over time, all sections receive more balanced attention.
Reduced “illusion of mastery”
Playing from the beginning can mask weaknesses; random entry exposes them quickly.
Variations
Chain two random segments together
Introduce deliberate jumps (e.g., from one distant section to another)
Occasionally increase the length of the lead-in/lead-out
Mix with slow practice or hands-separate work
Important balance

This doesn’t replace full run-throughs. Linear playing is still important for:

phrasing
large-scale structure
musical continuity

But as a complement, randomised segment practice seems to produce much more robust results, especially in terms of memory and transitions.

This is a common enough high level practice technique. It's very annoying though, and difficult to stick with. I think this is better done after a piece is learned. The opportunity cost is time. It can take much longer to learn a piece of music this way, and that time can be better spent learning multiple pieces, if you are still a learner.

Small segments as opposed to "linear from the beginning" is what good teachers teach.  You'll see teachers complain about students who still insist on going linear and how to stop them from doing that.

Did you have piano lessons yourself where you were taught to start from the beginning.  Or is that what your son was taught before you devised your method?  (Or alternatively, he was given a piece and not guided on how to practise?)

Even better: study the piece ahead of time to find what the hardest parts are.  Aim for those first for your sections (often called "chunks").  You can also practise backward. which then gives you the lead-in and lead-out.  For lead-outs my teacher makes sure that students extend their chunks into the next measure.  Otherwise you can get these little pauses measure to measure.

You have come upon something that does get taught.  What I'm curious about atm is how you came to the idea of people practising from beginning to end.  Did you experience it taught that way?

Your kid will never be able to memorize a piece this way. I do this only when I play a collection of self-contained pieces e.g. Brahms' op.118 which consists of six independent pieces. Exactly because I get tired or lose focus around the middle of it so I practise the pieces in random order each time.

I usually cut sections that I have problems with and practice those repeatedly, with lead-in (and out). There is the saying, you have to practice something x times to learn it, but it is more or less wasted time to practice too much of what you have mastered. However, randomization is good for preparing for memory blackouts.
