“Memory Space” Pieces
on: April 22, 2026, 12:53:24 AM
This post was inspired by “On the Transmigration of Souls”, a piece written by John Adams. Adams wrote the piece in the aftermath of 9/11 for the families of victims to the attacks as a way to think on their feelings.

Are there any pieces you know that are “memory spaces” for you? For me, it’s the first movement of the Clementi F# Minor Sonata. I’d like to hear you’re thoughts.
Current Repertoire
BACH - French Suite No. 6 in E Major, BWV 817, I. Allemande
GRIEG - March of the Dwarfs, Op. 54, No. 4
HAYDN - Sonata in D Major, Hob. XVI:37, I. Allegro con brio

In terms of "in memoriam" pieces...
Lyapunov - Op. 11 Transcendental Etude no. 12 "Elégie en Mémoire de François Liszt" (the whole set is actually a homage to Liszt, who originally was going to write 24 Etudes -- one in every key -- but stopped halfway; Lyapunov's are in the remaining 12 keys.)

Wakim - Rivulet

Not for piano, but worth mentioning is Felix Mendelssohn - Op. 80 String Quartet no. 6
Amateur pianist, beginning composer, creator of the Musical Madness tournament (2024-26).

A couple of recent discoveries by Native American composer Louis W Ballard. The 'City of Silver' is Argentina and he was referencing primarily the forced disappearances of the Dirty War in the late 20c, but also the earlier indigenous populations (the dedication says 'for all the disappeared ones of the world'). The 'City of Fire' is Los Alamos where the atomic bomb was first tested.
