Most difficult Tchaikovsky piece?
on: May 13, 2026, 02:19:34 PM
Hi!
I wanna torture myself cuz I'm so bored. What is the most difficult SOLO Piano pieces by him? I know his Dumka "Russian Rustic Scene" Op. 59 is quite difficult, but I believe there's definitely more difficult pieces than that. And as I said SOLO cuz I never play concertos and for competitions I go to this piece is not one of the choices lol. Thanks!

I love the contrabass and the piano. They are both good

Probably Pletnev's transcriptions of Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty. I wish he'd do Swan Lake too.

Nutcracker (idk why they didn't combine into one video)

Sleeping Beauty

Youtube used to have file size limits that capped videos at about 10 minutes long.

Why are those pieces not by Tchaikovsky?

Tchaikovsky isn't really considered a 'serious' piano composer beyond the concerti, I haven't heard of him in solo piano competitions except Pletnev (Nutcracker was done for the Tchaik competition). If you're at the level to be doing competitions yourself, you shouldn't turn your nose up at transcriptions.

...Is there some sort of inside joke about mixing up Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff that I'm just not aware of?

Relatedly, Tchaikovsky's Op. 37 Sonata is quite difficult, but it's one of my least favorite Romantic Sonatas and IMO not even worth attaching to the post.

It might be cos of my original post. I found the OPs response a bit rude so responded in kind, then edited it later (after dizzyfingers posted) because I felt bad for ranting. But I'd said that if this thread was about Rach or Scriabin there'd be tons of replies. I assume DF was picking up on that, and I spoiled the joke by deleting my rant ><
