possibly going to start teaching piano!
on: April 09, 2005, 05:40:50 AM
i've just discovered a job position to teach piano to young students at primary schools and am considering attempting to do it! however the only kid i've ever taught was my sister in which i taught her some grade 2 piece which she amazingly can still play from memory (this was like 5-6 years ago!), so i'm a bit worried that i'm going to teach the poor children bad technique or something. so i was just wondering if you fantastic teachers here could give me some advice about starting this? thanks heaps!

read everything you can from reputable sources. I am sure bernhard can lead you in the right direction. I know that he has read tons of books.

congratulations on the position.

Is it teaching groups or one on one tuition? Is the curriculum laid out for you?

From your description it sounds more like an introduction to music than serious music lessons - the kids probably won't even practice so I doubt they'll be getting Carpal Tunnel Syndrome even if you intentionally tried to teach them an appaling technique!

It doesn't matter that you have only taught one other person - give it a chance, you'll do a decent job. It could also be an eye opener and give you a better indication of your desired future career path.

well i'm not too sure, there could be group classes, i'm waiting for a response from the people. the ad said they'd fully train you though, so it's not like i need to really know much yet, i just want to! yeah this'll be good, see if i like teaching or not, keeping my options open in all areas
