Repertoire rec to contrast Mephisto Waltz?
on: June 23, 2026, 05:50:32 AM
Hey guys, I'm competing in a piano competition sometime in october this year, and I'm looking for some repertoire recommendations?
The programme needs to be under 20 minutes, and mephisto waltz already takes about 11. I'm trying to get some good contrast in my programme so maybe like, baroque and some contemporary? I was thinking among the lines of like, ligeti, for some super dissonant kind of contemporary or maybe going the opposite direction with something like the weissenberg arrangements of trenet for something very sweet, very lyrical.
along with some baroque, but I'm keen to hear your guys' opinions!

If you do a Ligeti I'd pick something like etudes 2 or 5 rather than one of the firework-y ones, because you already have plenty of fireworks in Mephisto.

Or maybe combine your ideas and look at neo-Baroque eg. something from Ravel Tombeau de Couperin, a Shostakovich P&F, etc.

Perhaps Saariaho's Ballade or Prelude?

I'm sure I'll think of others, but I'm drawing a blank right now for some reason. :/

...Why wouldn't they like a Beethoven slow movement?

I think demonstrating light, balanced, yet musically nuanced playing would make a good contrast to Mephisto Waltz - - like a Haydn sonata or some Scarlatti sonatas.

Ravel is much like Liszt, so if something 20th century then something from Messiaen: Vingt regards sur l'Enfant Jésus might demonstrate another side of your musical skill.

In fairness, I think a lot of people consider the Classical and Romantic styles to be much more similar than, e.g., Romanticism and Spectralism.
