i guess not too many people here know enough to spit out a couple of words about this pianist. or,...perhaps...he is just too cool to be talked about?

During my undergrad I had the opportunity of performing a Brahms Intermezzo in a Dang Thai Son masterclass.  He was very helpful, taking my interpretation to another level.

I feel very bad for him with regards to the whole Chopin Competition controversy.  Pogorelich who placed second, has had a wonderful career.  Yet Dang Thai Son has been left in the shadow.   I know that he teaches at the University of Montreal.  However, his performing schedule is very thin.

I heard him play in Victoira, BC Canada. He was very impressive. He played chopin's grande poloniase and the scherzo no.2 as well as debussy and some other pieces i can't remember...
What i do remember is that i was very impressed with his playing and enjoyed the concert alot! :)

Dang Thai Son is a magnificent artist, whose art is woefully under-appreciated and unjustifiably lesser known.  One rarely hears noble and humble musicianship of his order in our day and age of excess egotism and hyper-marketing.

It is unfortunate that his outstanding and justified success at the 1980 Chopin Competition should have been marred by the controversy surrounding Pogorelich - a controversy which, it should be emphasized, belongs entirely to Pogorelich, and has nothing to do with Mr. Dang himself.  Nevertheless, this has not prevented him from building his career, and meriting the high esteem of the likes of Krystian Zimerman, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Nelson Freire, or the late Isaac Stern.  I read in a recent interview that he had been invited to the jury of the upcoming 2005 Chopin Competition in Warsaw with Martha Argerich, which in many ways is a symbolic affirmation of his past triumph and of his continuing artistic achievements.

Dang Thai Son's Chopin recordings, which are are relatively unknown, easily rank alongside or surpass  the most lauded available, in my opinion (like the complete Nocturnes or the Piano Concertos), and anyone who has ever had the privilege of witnessing a open lesson with this master is sure to recognise the depth and originality which define a genuine artist.
