Too much or ok?
on: April 11, 2005, 01:57:21 AM
I've studied with my teacher for a little more than a year now, and I've learned many pieces.  I'm currently polishing : Chopin etude op.10 no.12 and Rachmaninoff's C-sharp prelude(wich I have one month to learn in all, I began it 2 weeks ago, perform it in two weeks.) And my teacher made me learn those in like 3-4 lessons : c.p.e Bach's solfeggieto and Bach's first invetion. I have a short deadline for the rach C-sharp prelude, and I began Chopin study op.10 no.1 , and I'll begin Bach's prelude and fugue in c minor from book 1 next class. Overall, I've being playing for about 1 year and 3 quarter. And all those pieces, I won't just play with them, I will bring them to performance level, at a high interpretation standard. BTW, my lessons can take 3 hours ( they are not time limited, my teacher do what she has to do then she leaves), and I learn new things all along this 3 hour. And it is really not too much for me, I like it this way. So the question is: do you think I should try to learn less at a time, or is it ok(for me, seeing what I've done yet)?

Are your lessons once a week or more often?  I have to say I'm impressed by your ability to quickly learn - you'll find it an asset, but don't be discouraged if something happens to take more time or you don't immediately "get it".  Those 3 hour lessons have probably helped you accelerate your growth.  If everything is going well now, why change? I say keep on learning at the rate you can.

Actually, you should be doing much, much more. I think a Chopin etude a week is doable judging from your phenomenal advancement. And a Bach Prelude and Fugue would be a nice addition. If you really push you could get through most of the standard paino literature in a few years. I'll be looking forward to your Carnegie Hall debut sometime next year..

You seem to be doing well, I'd think either you or your teacher is a much better judge than anyone on this forum could be.

Once a week yeah, but it happens I miss a week sometimes.

Hahaha... really funny one. I really don't see what's phenomenal in my post... I didn't learned the Rach 3 in three days like some people of my age do. So I consider myself pretty normal.

I remember you saying earlier that you were considering Mazzeppa.  Why not add that?  Based off your description of yourself you should be able to handle it.

Yeah, I'm learning it for fun, on my own. Not preparing to do it in concert.

No. I am being quite serious. You are obviously quite gifted and you really should take advantage of what has been given to you. I believe that a new Chopin etude and Bach Prelude & Fugue each week will help you to extend your repertoire.  Adding a Beethoven sonata every two to three weeks and in a year or two you'll have the three most important fundamentals of the keyboard literature under your belt: the WTC, the Beethoven Sonatas and the Chopin Etudes. I say go for it!

Well... I have allready done a beethoven sonata in the past (pathetique, only first movement). My teacher said she was going to buy me the 32 beethoven sonata book for my birthday  ;D So I'll begin to look at these soon. But my list of things I want to learn is just enormous... hehe. I really don't know where to put my priorities.
